Audit Report Reveals Shortcomings in the Judiciary

The Audit Office has released a report examining the financial statements of the Republic of Cyprus for 2023, focusing on the Judiciary. The audit revealed serious weaknesses in management, transparency, and accountability, as well as significant pending issues requiring immediate correction. Specifically, problems were identified in the recording and compensation of judges' leave, compliance with regulations regarding sick leave, and the assignment of work to a former President of the Supreme Court without a tender. In addition, the report mentions the low energy efficiency of the Supreme Court buildings, the granting of free parking spaces to lawyers, delays in issuing decisions leading to appeals to the ECHR, the loss of books from the Supreme Court library, and pending financial matters regarding canteens. Finally, inadequate monitoring of movable property and incomplete updating of the Arrest Warrant Register were highlighted.
