Idalion Mayor Urges Public to Avoid Affected Area Due to Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The Mayor of Idalion, Stavros Hadjiyiannis, has appealed to the public to avoid the Idalion area due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in one livestock unit. The area is home to approximately 100 livestock units and a large animal population (100,000 cows, sheep, and pigs). The Municipality has taken measures for a month, with spraying at entrances and exits of livestock zones and more recently with intensified spraying. Mr. Hadjiyiannis is concerned about the potential spread of the disease, especially to larger dairy farms, and emphasizes that the disease is easily airborne. He expresses satisfaction with the public's response to his appeal, as reduced traffic was observed in the area. Veterinary Services and the Forestry Department are already on site to address the situation.
