Nurse Shortage and Public Hospitals High on Health Ministry's Agenda

The Ministry of Health is prioritizing the strengthening of public hospitals and addressing the chronic shortage of nurses. The Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalambides, presented a series of interventions to the Parliamentary Health Committee to upgrade health services, emphasizing that staffing with nursing personnel is a long-standing challenge. In this context, strategic planning for the future capacity of hospitals is being promoted, with the completion of the so-called capacity plan by 2026. At the same time, a campaign to attract nursing staff is underway, resulting in an approximately 85% increase in the number of nurses in recent years. However, needs are increasing at a faster rate due to the expansion of health services and the increase in available beds. The Ministry of Health is awaiting a report from an expert, which will help to identify the real needs of the system in terms of human resources. In addition, legislative initiatives are being promoted, while emphasis is placed on strengthening public hospitals, which are the cornerstone of the health system. Addressing the nursing shortage, improving infrastructure, and strategic planning are key pillars of the Ministry's policy.
