Investigation into 'Egyptian Steel' in Cyprus and EU – Complaint to Customs Authorities

An investigation reveals a potential circumvention of European regulations regarding the import of reinforcing steel from Egypt. According to the research, significant quantities of reinforcing steel are being imported into Cyprus and other European countries under a different customs code, thus avoiding the duties and carbon emission recording rules that apply to the normal product category. This practice, already recorded in countries such as Bulgaria, has led to an increase in imports with the specific code in Cyprus, estimated at up to 30,000 tons annually. The Cypriot customs authorities are investigating the matter, and it may also be brought to the attention of the European Union.
