Erhurman: “Von der Leyen’s Speech Ignores Turkish Cypriots”

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman stated that they will not ignore being ignored, commenting on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s speech at the ceremony of Cyprus’s accession to the EU, which he read. According to reports from the occupied territories, Erhurman also stated in his post that there wasn’t a single line in von der Leyen’s speech mentioning “Turkish Cypriots.” He criticized the focus on Byzantine history, stating, “As if the only thing in the history of this island was Byzantium!” Erhurman said he does not endorse the approach of “let’s ignore it so as not to worsen our relations” and that for him, the right thing is “let’s not ignore that we are being ignored. Let’s show it in every forum so that relations are put on the right footing.” He added that he does not avoid meetings or refrain from conveying his thoughts/facts/truths when he meets with officials. He continues to explain to all EU officials that “there is a need for confidence-building measures between the EU and Turkish Cypriots.” He adds that they have already extensively explained their views on the political dimension of the issue and the anomaly concerning Cyprus within the EU. “We continue to explain this to everyone we meet. I will not elaborate here. However, I believe that even a simple review of this speech by EU officials would be enlightening in understanding many of the things we are trying to convey.” The Turkish Cypriot people were, are, and will continue to be on this island, he concludes, and there is more than just dialogue, patience, and composure. He urges that no one underestimate their determination.
