Luxury Car Scam Uncovered by Customs

Published February 10, 2026, 14:32

The Customs Department has uncovered a new scam involving the import of used luxury cars from England. Perpetrators import the vehicles through the Netherlands or Bulgaria and declare them as European in order to undervalue them by one-fifth to one-twentieth of their actual value. The offenses are not committed in Cyprus, but in the United Kingdom, where the cars first enter the EU. The Customs Department is cooperating with these countries to identify the undervaluation. Over the past 16 months, more than 1000 vehicles have been sent to the countries of origin, with requests for administrative assistance, seeking confirmation of whether the cars were cleared at the declared prices. In most cases, the responses received confirm the undervaluation, as the declared prices are automatically accepted. In addition, they also detected the circumvention of national legislation regarding very old used cars imported from third countries, as Cyprus prohibits the import of cars over 5 years old from non-European countries.
