Angelides: Decolonization of British Bases in Cyprus 'Never Completed'

Legal expert Simos Angelides, speaking on the Protoseleido show, stated that the status of the British Bases in Cyprus does not constitute true sovereignty, but a “sui generis colonial-type situation.” He argued that decolonization has not been completed and that Cyprus has been targeted due to operations originating from the Bases, often without its consent. Mr. Angelides described Brexit as a lost opportunity for substantial renegotiation, as Cyprus had negotiating leverage. He referred to the case of Mauritius before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, where it was ruled that decolonization had not been legally completed. He emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus could move internationally, if it decides politically, to challenge the status of the Bases.
