Bloodshed in Iran: Confirmed Deaths in Protests Exceed 5,000

The protests in Iran have left a heavy toll, with at least 5,000 deaths, including around 500 members of the security forces. The deaths were concentrated mainly in Kurdish regions of northwestern Iran, where separatist groups operate. Iranian authorities blame “terrorists” and foreign powers, such as Israel, for inciting the unrest and providing weapons to protesters. The HRANA human rights organization reports that more than 24,000 arrests have been confirmed. The Kurdish rights organization Hengaw confirms the fierce clashes in Kurdish areas.
