AKEL to Request Investigation into Controversial Video Alleging Corruption

AKEL announced it will send letters to the Attorney General, the Anti-Corruption Authority, and the Chief of Police, requesting an investigation into the content of a video that circulated on the X platform. The video implicates the Presidential Palace in corruption allegations and has sparked strong reactions. AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou called for the immediate suspension of the Director of the President's Office, Charalambos Charalambous, and the abolition of the 'Fund of the President's wife Filippa Karsera'. Stefanou described the video as particularly serious, as it raises political, ethical, and other important issues regarding the President of the Republic and his inner circle. He argued that the video reveals practices of institutional collusion and corruption, and criticized the government's response as 'morally diminished'. According to the video, the Director of the President's Office, who is also the President's son-in-law, describes practices of 'quid pro quo' between the government and business interests, in exchange for favors and services. It also refers to a mechanism operating within the Presidential Palace to facilitate funding and services to entrepreneurs. AKEL pledged to act as a bulwark to ensure transparency and accountability in the case. Stefanou called on the competent authorities to investigate the allegations in the video ex officio, while also urging the ruling coalition parties to take a position on government practices.
