US Secretary of Defense on Iran: We Did Not Start the War, But We Will Finish It

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that the US strikes on Iran were not aimed at regime change, but were a response to 47 years of war waged by the Iranian regime against the United States. He condemned Iranian actions such as rocket attacks, booby-trapped cars and funding terrorist groups. He characterized the US air operation as “the deadliest, most complex and most expensive” in history, emphasizing its scale. He argued that Iran was developing powerful missiles and drones with the aim of obtaining nuclear blackmail, but the US operation has undermined these plans. He reiterated that Washington did not seek to start the war, but will finish it. At the same time, he stressed that the Iranian people have the opportunity to take advantage of this situation, urging Iranian security forces to choose wisely. Hegseth accused Tehran of refusing to negotiate a “peaceful and rational” agreement with the US and of delaying in order to replenish missile stockpiles. He stated that the US “is setting the terms of this war” and will win.
