Defensive Forces Gathered in Cyprus – “No Possibility of Engaging in Offensive Actions”

Professor Konstantinos Filis, Director of the Institute of International Affairs and Professor at the American College of Greece, emphasizes the need to create a "shield" around Cyprus due to its geographical proximity to Iran, the presence of terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah, and the perception that Cyprus is considered Israel's "long arm." The concentration of military forces in Cyprus, led by Greece, is a consequence of this concern. Mr. Filis states that Cyprus must be protected from potential threats, including British bases. However, he assures that the gathered forces are defensive in nature and have no intention of engaging in offensive actions, as all states have made clear. He points out the risk of escalation of hostilities, not only for the countries of the Gulf, but for all countries. He also emphasizes the risk of terrorist attacks, potentially targeting countries around the world in the name of Islam or Iran. Mr. Filis points out that the use of drones by Iran may be more effective than the use of missiles, as it increases the cost of interception and can cause significant damage. Finally, he comments on Britain's delays in addressing developments, referring to its internal problems.
