Annetta Dimitriou: EU Must Promote De-escalation in the Middle East

The President of the House of Representatives, Annetta Dimitriou, during her speech at the COSAC Conference Plenary, emphasized the need for immediate action by the European Union to de-escalate the crisis in the Middle East. Ms. Dimitriou stressed that the crisis poses challenges for the EU and requires solidarity to build a stronger and safer Europe. She highlighted the need for urgent diplomacy to protect civilians and ensure energy supply chains. Her speech was delivered via teleconference due to flight disruptions to Cyprus, highlighting the sensitivity of the region. Ms. Dimitriou referred to the influence of social media and misinformation, calling for seriousness and responsibility. Cyprus, according to Ms. Dimitriou, remains a pillar of stability and is implementing the “ESTIA” plan to support the evacuation of European and third-country nationals. Cyprus' Presidency of the EU Council offers an opportunity to address important issues such as geopolitical conflicts and energy insecurity. Finally, Ms. Dimitriou supported the need for a European Union with strategic autonomy in various sectors, capable of acting as an independent global actor. She also highlighted the importance of diplomacy and cooperation with Middle Eastern countries that share the values of the EU.
