Livestock Farmers Protest New Foot-and-Mouth Disease Measures in Cyprus

New measures implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture to protect animals from foot-and-mouth disease in the Timi and Anarita areas of Paphos are causing strong reactions from livestock farmers. The main complaint concerns the operating hours of the crossings, which open at 05:00 and close at 07:00, which they consider problematic for the daily operation of livestock units. Farmers argue that they need free access to their facilities at any time, especially during this period when many animals are giving birth and continuous presence is required. They also express concerns about the financial cost resulting from the delay in access to farms and the lack of flexibility from the Department of Agriculture. They believe that policing should be limited to nighttime hours, as they are able to control access to their units, and that the implementation of the measures forces them to move "like thieves." They emphasize that they were among the first to take protective measures, as they have no interest in the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Another farmer notes that the measures should primarily target external visitors and not the owners of the units.
