Indefinite Suspension for Former Bishop of Paphos Tychikos: Synod's Reasoning

Published January 8, 2026, 15:23

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus decided on the indefinite suspension of former Bishop of Paphos Tychikos, after examining the matter and confirming the decision by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The decision was based on Tychikos' refusal to comply with the terms set by the Synod, as well as his “unacceptable movements from an ecclesiastical ethics point of view,” such as resorting to civil courts. Additionally, the Synod condemned the unrest caused by Tychikos' statements and his attempt to create divisions among its members. Tychikos will remain suspended until he submits a specific Confession of Faith, withdraws his lawsuit, condemns schism from the Church, and accepts new duties. Supporters of Tychikos demonstrated outside the Archiepiscopal Palace.
