Former President of Cyprus, George Vasiliou, Passes Away

Former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vasiliou, has passed away at the age of 95 at the General Hospital of Nicosia, following a period of hospitalization. The news was announced by his wife, Androulla Vasiliou, who expressed her deep sorrow over the loss of her beloved partner. George Vasiliou served as the third President of Cyprus from 1988 to 1993, succeeding Archbishop Makarios and Spyros Kyprianou. Born in Famagusta in 1931, Vasiliou studied economics at universities in Europe and earned a doctorate. Prior to his political career, he founded the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CEMS) and was active in academia and research. As an independent candidate, he was elected President in 1988 with the support of AKEL, defeating Glaukos Klerides in the second round. During his presidency, he sought to reactivate the National Council to promote dialogue between political forces. He pursued a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem through negotiations with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, but these efforts ultimately failed, due to, as he stated, Turkish intransigence. Simultaneously, he promoted economic development, fiscal consolidation, and the modernization of the state, while the establishment of the University of Cyprus and the Public Administration Academy were also significant during his term.
