‘Rage Bait’ Named Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2025

The Oxford Dictionary has named “rage bait” as its Word of the Year for 2025. The term describes online content deliberately created to provoke anger or outrage, using provocative or offensive tactics. This choice reflects a growing awareness of the manipulative methods used online to increase traffic and engagement. The use of “rage bait” has tripled in the last year, according to the dictionary’s linguistic data. Its selection fits a series of pessimistic choices, such as “AI slop” and “parasocial,” which were also recognized as words of the year. Casper Grathwohl, President of Oxford Languages, stated that the increase in the use of the term shows that people have become more aware of manipulative tactics online. He added that there is a shift from attracting attention through curiosity to attempting to influence users’ emotions and reactions. The selection of “rage bait” aligns with the choices of other dictionaries, such as “brain rot” from Dictionary.com and “vibe coding” from Collins, which highlight concerns about the influence of social media and artificial intelligence on human thought and behavior. Oxford points out that anger and engagement are fueled by algorithms, leading to mental exhaustion.
