Jakarta Now the World's Most Populous City, Surpassing Tokyo

According to the UN's 2025 World Urbanization Prospects report, Jakarta has become the world's most populous city, surpassing Tokyo and Dhaka, with nearly 42 million residents. This change is due to a new UN methodology that applies uniform criteria for defining urban areas, removing national definitions. Tokyo, which held the top spot for decades, falls to third place due to population decline in Japan, caused by an aging population, low birth rate, and limited immigration. The UN methodology adds approximately 30 million residents to Jakarta compared to previous measurements. The report predicts that by 2050, Dhaka will surpass Jakarta to become the largest city, while Tokyo's population will decrease significantly, ranking seventh globally. The list of the 10 largest cities in the world in 2050, according to UN estimates, is as follows: Dhaka (52.1 million), Jakarta (51.8 million), Shanghai (34.9 million), New Delhi (33.9 million), Karachi (32.6 million), Cairo (32.4 million), Tokyo (30.7 million), Guangzhou (29.2 million), Manila (27.1 million), and Kolkata (23.8 million). The report highlights global urbanization trends and the challenges faced by megacities, such as population management, infrastructure provision, and addressing environmental issues. The shift in the ranking of the world's most populous cities signifies a demographic shift towards Asia.
