Foot-and-Mouth Disease: 10 Km Vaccination Cycle Closing – “Consumer Can Safely Consume”

Vaccinations of goats and sheep against foot-and-mouth disease continue in the critical surveillance zone, with the delivery of an additional 9,800 doses of vaccine. A total of 135,000 doses have been distributed, of which 35,950 to cattle and 99,050 to goats and sheep. The vaccination of goats and sheep is expected to be completed within the week, thus completing the 3 and 10 kilometer cycle. Veterinary Services are in contact with international experts and are considering extending the vaccination to the entire island. It is confirmed that the 529,000 doses of vaccine donated by the European Commission are sufficient for the current phase. Checks and recording of cases continue, and a decree has been issued prohibiting the training of hunting dogs in the area of infected livestock farms. Laboratory tests remain negative.
