Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak: Cases in 22 Units, Culling and Vaccinations Continue

An outbreak of foot and mouth disease has been recorded in 22 livestock units in the province of Larnaca, resulting in the death of approximately 1300 animals as of yesterday evening. Another 2700 sheep and goats are expected to be culled by tomorrow. The Veterinary Services continue epidemiological investigations and laboratory tests, which so far have yielded negative results for the spread of the disease. At the same time, vaccinations are progressing by private veterinarians, who have procured an additional 26,000 doses. The assessment of the economic damage, including the value of animals, hay, feed, and the destruction of milk, is underway to determine the compensation that will be paid to farmers. Investigations into the circumstances of the foot and mouth disease outbreak are ongoing, and any evidence found will be submitted to the Police. The competent services are taking daily biosecurity, cleaning, and protection measures in the infected units. Teams are assessing animals, milk, and hay, while teams are conducting epidemiological investigations in the area and other areas of Cyprus. The spokesperson of the Veterinary Services, Sotiria Georgiadou, assured that the Veterinary Services laboratory is accredited and regularly checked, and there is direct communication with the national reference laboratory.
