Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Cases Reach 42 After Outbreak in Dromolaxia – The Thorns of the Occupied Territories Occupied the Parliament

The number of foot-and-mouth disease cases in Cyprus has risen to 42, with the new case in Dromolaxia causing concern about further spread, mainly in the provinces of Larnaca and Nicosia. Cases have been identified in vaccinated units, exacerbating the situation. The process of culling, necessary to eradicate the disease, faces resistance from farmers, however 15,500 animals have already been culled and another 15,000 are expected. Protection and surveillance zones have been set up around the affected areas. The Parliamentary Agriculture Committee discussed the issue, with the European Commissioner rejecting the request to avoid mass culling. The government is activating support measures, such as advances to farmers, compensation and plans to replenish livestock by importing animals from disease-free countries. Strong criticism was leveled at the situation in the occupied territories, where there is a lack of cooperation in managing the source of the problem.
