Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak in Cyprus: Over 4,000 Livestock Animals at Risk

A foot-and-mouth disease outbreak has resulted in significant livestock losses in Cyprus, with approximately 1,300 goats and sheep dead as of last night in the Aradippou and Livadia areas. Another 2,700 animals are expected to die by tomorrow. Veterinary Services report that the situation is stable and investigations to identify the source of the infection are ongoing, with negative results so far. Vaccination of livestock by private veterinarians is also underway, with an additional 26,000 doses procured. The market value of the animals, hay, and feed is being assessed, while the destruction and counting of milk from infected farms are proceeding to determine compensation for farmers. Investigations into the circumstances of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak are ongoing, and any evidence will be submitted to the Police. Relevant services are taking daily biosecurity, cleaning, and protection measures at infected farms. Teams are assessing animals, milk, and hay, while teams conduct epidemiological investigations, taking samples from the wider area and other regions of Cyprus. The Veterinary Services assure the reliability of laboratory tests, emphasizing that the laboratory is accredited and regularly inspected. In case of doubt about the results, the European Commission will be informed immediately and the license to issue results will be suspended.
