Wandefuhl: Germany Not Neutral as EU Partner to Greece and Cyprus

German Foreign Minister Johann Wandefuhl stated that Germany is willing to contribute to the de-escalation of Greek-Turkish relations, including the Cyprus issue, and emphasized that Germany, as a partner to Greece and Cyprus in the EU, is not neutral. Answering a question about the possible accession of Cyprus to NATO, he stated that the EU had linked the accession to the resolution of the Cyprus issue, but the situation worsened. Mr. Wandefuhl expressed his belief that the EU would benefit from the de-escalation of relations. Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stressed that Greece will support the choices of Cyprus and that the enlargement of the EU creates conditions of greater resilience and solidarity.
