Parliament: Police Discretionary on Publishing Mobile Camera Locations

The Parliament approved a bill allowing the Police to publish in advance the general areas where mobile speed cameras will operate, without announcing the exact hours of operation. This publication is optional and aims to warn the public. The proposal arose from public reactions regarding the lack of warning signs and the operation of devices in inconspicuous locations, creating the impression that their use is for revenue collection rather than road safety. During the discussion, opinions were expressed that the system, as it currently operates, has turned into a means of collecting fines rather than preventing accidents. It was pointed out that the devices are often placed in places where drivers cannot easily see them, in order to "catch" them unprepared. The proposer of the bill stated that the Police have created a hostile relationship with the citizens, instead of cooperating with them for road safety. Other MPs expressed reservations, considering the proposal to be excessive or that it could lead to a reduction in the effectiveness of the controls. Finally, the proposal was approved with 27 votes in favor, two against and three abstentions, marking an effort to increase transparency and trust between the Police and citizens on road safety issues.
