December Rainfall and Hydrological Year: Initial Findings

December rainfall in the free areas of Cyprus reached 116% of the normal level, according to preliminary data from the Department of Meteorology. The average total rainfall from December 1st to 8:00 am on January 1st was 122.8 millimeters, compared to the normal volume of 105.6 millimeters. However, the total rainfall from October 1st, the start of the hydrological year, to January 1st was 159.2 millimeters, which corresponds to 83% of the normal rainfall for this period (191.6 millimeters). This suggests that, despite the increased rainfall in December, the overall rainfall for the hydrological year remains below average. The largest amounts of rainfall were recorded at the Polis Chrysochous station (219.2 millimeters - 220% of normal), in the Stavros tis Psokas area (249.3 millimeters - 154% of normal), in Athalasassa (83.3 millimeters - 144% of normal) and in Athienou (88.1 millimeters - 144% of normal). For January, up to 8:00 am on Friday, the average total rainfall was very small, only 0.1 millimeters. The development of rainfall will be closely monitored, as it is crucial for meeting Cyprus's hydrological needs.
