AKEL General Secretary: Calls for Suspension of Presidential Office Director and Abolition of First Lady's Fund

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, denounced serious irregularities and ethical issues revealed in a recently circulated video, which he claims exposes the President of the Republic and his inner circle. The video contains allegations of serving business interests, violating laws regarding funding, and potentially circumventing EU sanctions. AKEL is calling for an immediate ex officio investigation of the allegations by the competent authorities, such as the Attorney General and the Anti-Corruption Authority. Simultaneously, it proposes political interventions to ensure transparency and accountability. The focus of the allegations is the Director of the President's Office, who in the video describes practices of quid pro quo with business interests in exchange for favors. AKEL demands his immediate removal from office and the abolition of the fund managed by the President's wife. Stefanos Stefanou characterized the issue as “institutional entanglement and corruption,” expressing AKEL’s determination to act as a barrier against such practices and promote transparency and accountability.
