Why Turkey is Building a Spaceport in Somalia

Turkey is proceeding with the construction of a spaceport in Somalia, as part of a broader strategy for space autonomy and reducing dependence on foreign powers. Ankara seeks to create a domestic satellite industry and gain autonomous access to space, without relying on companies like SpaceX or participating in the Artemis Accords. The choice of Somalia is due to its geographical location near the Equator and access to the Indian Ocean, but it comes with risks due to the country's political instability and the activity of Al Shabaab. The project is part of a wider Turkish support package for Somalia, in exchange for strengthening Turkey's influence in the Horn of Africa region.
