George Vassiliou, one of Cyprus's most prominent political figures, has passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy in the island's political and diplomatic history. He served as the third President of the Republic of Cyprus from 1988 to 1993, succeeding Spyros Kyprianou and preceding Glafcos Clerides. Born in Famagusta in 1931, he studied economics at universities in Europe and earned a doctorate from the University of Budapest. Prior to his political career, Vassiliou worked as an economist in the United Kingdom and founded the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CEMS), which evolved into a significant research and consulting organization in the region. He was also involved in the establishment of educational institutions in the fields of management and information technology. His election as President in 1988 was as an independent candidate, with the support of AKEL and other independent figures. His political career was characterized by efforts to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, through dialogue and realistic approaches. He was known for his European orientation and commitment to European values. George Vassiliou is survived by his wife, Androulla, and his children. His death has caused widespread grief in Cyprus, and his contribution to the island's political and economic development will be enduring.
