George Vasiliou: Realist and Reformer Who Shaped Cyprus's European Prospects Passes Away

George Vasiliou, former President of the Republic of Cyprus, passed away at the age of 94 at the General Hospital of Nicosia. His wife, Androula Vasiliou, announced his death with a moving post on X, expressing her grief over the loss of her life partner. George Vasiliou was elected President in 1988 as an outsider and marked a period of modernization and European alignment for Cyprus. He introduced reforms such as VAT and founded the University of Cyprus, laying the foundations for the island’s intellectual and scientific autonomy.
