Cyprus Protest Law Overhaul: Key Changes to Address Concerns

The Cypriot government is in the final stages of revising a law concerning protests, which was initially deemed problematic by the OSCE for violating fundamental human rights. The changes primarily address the use of masks, responsibility for demonstrations, and the handling of violence during them. According to MP Ireni Charalambidou, the amendments will allow protesters to cover their faces with masks, unless they exhibit threatening behavior or carry dangerous objects. Furthermore, the designation of an organizer for each demonstration, even spontaneous ones, will no longer be required. Regarding violence, the police will have the right to arrest those causing disturbances, but not to disperse the entire demonstration due to the actions of a small minority. The proposed law is expected to be put to a vote in the Plenary Session of the Parliament within the next 15 days.
