“Are You Dead?”: Viral Chinese App for Young People Living Alone

A new Chinese mobile application called “Are You Dead?” has gone viral, targeting young people living alone. The app works by simply requiring the user to confirm their presence every two days. If the user does not respond, the app notifies a pre-designated emergency contact. Its popularity is driven by the growing trend of solo living in China, where it is estimated that there could be up to 200 million single-person households by 2030. Many users express their fear of dying alone and unnoticed. Despite its success, the app's name has drawn criticism, with the company considering a change. The app, known internationally as Demumu, is also performing well outside of China, particularly in countries with Chinese diaspora communities.
