EU Ready to Propose New Sanctions Against Iran Over Protests

The European Commission strongly condemned the violent suppression of protests in Iran, stating that it is “absolutely unacceptable” for people demonstrating peacefully for their freedom to be arrested and killed. The Commission’s spokesperson, Paola Pinó, expressed her solidarity with the “extremely brave citizens of Iran” and called for the immediate release of all imprisoned protesters and the restoration of internet access. The Commission’s spokesperson for foreign policy, Anwar El Anouny, stated that the EU is ready to propose new and stricter sanctions against Iran, in addition to those already in place. However, the decision rests with the member states and requires unanimity. Mr. El Anouny clarified that the EU has already imposed sanctions on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for Iran’s nuclear and ballistic program, its support for the Russian attack on Ukraine, and human rights violations. Finally, regarding the possible inclusion of the IRGC on the EU’s list of terrorist organizations, Mr. El Anouny stated that discussions between member states are ongoing and that any decision requires unanimity.
