Cyprus Approves Financial Aid for Livestock Farmers Affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The Cypriot Cabinet has approved an advance payment of up to €50,000 per livestock unit to cover income losses due to foot-and-mouth disease. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, described the decision as an immediate and substantial support for the primary sector. Simultaneously, a special committee has been established with representatives from various bodies, including livestock farmers and agricultural organizations, to determine individualized compensation packages. The committee will examine the needs of each farmer separately to ensure their full reactivation. Disease-free areas have already been identified for the potential import of animals after disinfection is completed. The government is committed to supporting livestock farmers and ensuring that no one is left without assistance, covering their financial obligations. The police are investigating the source of the infection, while the investigation will also examine potential liabilities.
