Audit Office: Paphos Running Out of Aggregate – Bats Exiled to Androlykou, Triggering EU Reaction

The Audit Office has found that Paphos is facing a shortage of aggregate, leading to consideration of opening a quarry in the Paphos Forest or transporting material from Limassol, which would increase costs. In addition, there are delays in issuing quarry licenses, non-collection of debts, non-prosecution of illegal activities and a lack of controls. The report notes that the available aggregate reserves in Androlykou are insufficient for the expansion of the port in Latsi. According to the report, Cyprus has sufficient reserves of raw materials until 2050, but their transport may be problematic. The protection of the Egyptian fruit bat, which is threatened by quarrying operations, is of interest to the EU. The report highlights the need for better coordination and more effective control of quarrying activities in Paphos and throughout Cyprus.
