Paphos Mayor Reopens Case of Cash Box - “Cash is Circulating”

The Mayor of Paphos, Phaedonas Phaedonos, strongly criticized the way funds were managed during President Christodoulides' 2023 election campaign, as well as contributions to the fund managed by the First Lady, referring to a recently released video. Mr. Phaedonos recalled his previous warning about a “former Minister who bought a safe” and emphasized that money is also circulated in cash, not only through banks. He also criticized the lack of transparency in the “Social Support Fund” and argued that the government tried to maintain the anonymity of donors for specific reasons. He called for the public disclosure of the names of the donors, suggesting that, if necessary, it should be imposed by the Parliament through legislation. He believes that this case is discrediting the country. The video features the Director of the President's Office, Charalambos Charalambous, former Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis, and Cyfield CEO Giorgos Chrysoschos. Mr. Phaedonos accused those involved of hypocrisy regarding underground funding and “black political money.” He reiterated the need for transparency and accountability, emphasizing that society must be able to distinguish truth from misinformation. The case has sparked strong reactions and questions about the funding of the election campaign and the management of financial resources in the Presidential Palace, and is expected to be discussed in the House of Representatives.
