Seven Deaths from Flu, Meeting at Ministry of Health Regarding Hospital Pressure

In Cyprus, seven deaths of patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza have been recorded since the beginning of the current epidemic season. Most of the deceased were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions. A total of 98 people have been hospitalized due to the flu, with 85 in state hospitals and 13 in private hospitals. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular testing in 39 cases and by rapid antigen testing in 59. The Ministry of Health held an emergency meeting with representatives from the OKYpY, the OAY, and private hospitals, aiming to better coordinate efforts to address the increased pressure on hospitals. The meeting focused on managing patients requiring hospitalization through collaboration between the public and private sectors. The Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Elisavet Konstantinou, stated that the health system is adequately prepared and that the necessary preparations have been made, with a focus on vaccination. At the same time, the Ministry of Health calls on citizens to observe basic personal protection measures, such as good hygiene, wearing a mask in closed spaces, and avoiding contact with people showing symptoms, especially vulnerable groups.
