Labor Committee Aims to Pass Disability Bill Before Parliament Closure

The Parliamentary Labor Committee is seeking to bring the bill for people with disabilities to the Plenary Session before the closure of Parliament, but this depends on the political will of the Government to accept improvements. Despite disagreements and reservations on individual provisions, there is general agreement on the need to advance the bill within the current parliamentary period. Committee President Andreas Kavkalias stated that a large number of proposals have been submitted, but the Committee's will is to promote the bill to the Plenary Session. However, he emphasized the need for political will from the Government to accept improvements. From the organizations' side, serious reservations were raised, mainly regarding the philosophy of the bill, as it does not holistically approach disability and does not adequately cover aspects such as education and housing. It was also pointed out that the assessment still relies on the grading of disability and not on the obstacles it creates. However, positive elements were recorded, such as the decoupling from the Minimum Guaranteed Income, the inclusion of the disability allowance, and the non-re-evaluation of children until the age of 18. The President of KYSOA, Themis Anthopoulou, argued that the bill should proceed, even though the amounts provided do not satisfy the disability movement, calling for immediate increases in benefits.
