Greece Welcomes 'Kimon' Frigate - A New Era for the Navy

The 'Kimon' frigate, the first of four FDI HN Belharra-class frigates, is expected to arrive in the Saronic Gulf today and dock at Salamis. Its arrival marks a new era for the Greek Navy, as the ship features advanced air defense and anti-submarine warfare systems, such as the Sea Fire radar and Aster-30 and Exocet missiles. The 'Kimon' is considered a strategic deterrent vessel, capable of significantly strengthening the power of the Greek fleet in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. The naming and flag-raising ceremony of the frigate took place on December 18th at the shipyards in France, with the presence of the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias. Subsequently, the ship sailed to Brest, where the installation and testing of its weaponry and sensors were completed. The 'Kimon' crew consists of 128 personnel. After its arrival in Salamis, the process of integration into the Fleet will begin, including certifications, tests, and training. Gradually, the ship will undertake operational roles. The government and the leadership of the General Naval Staff emphasize the importance of the 'Kimon' for national defense. The welcoming ceremony will be attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, President of the Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas, and the Minister of National Defense. The reception will be held with the participation of the 'Averof' battleship, the 'Olympias' trireme, and six ships of the Fleet, in an event with strong symbolism.
