Spain Sends Frigate 'Cristóbal Colón' to Cyprus

Spain is sending the frigate 'Cristóbal Colón' to Cyprus to offer protection amid the tensions in the Middle East. The frigate will accompany the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and Greek warships, following the drone attack on the British Akrotiri base. The Spanish frigate will carry out missions of 'protection and anti-aircraft defence' and will assist in 'any evacuation of non-military personnel'. The 'Cristóbal Colón' frigate is the most modern ship in the Spanish Navy and initially participated in naval operations in the Baltic Sea. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has stressed that Spain's position is 'not to war' and that his country will not succumb to pressure to support the US and Israeli war against Iran. The decision to send the frigate is part of a broader coordination between European countries to provide support to Cyprus. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto had earlier revealed Spain's intention to send forces to Cyprus, stressing that countries such as Spain, the Netherlands and France are likely to send aid to Cyprus for its protection.
