Cyprus Calls Emergency EU Meeting After Trump's Greenland-Related Tariffs

Published January 18, 2026, 07:22

Cyprus has convened an emergency meeting of the European Union's Foreign Ministers following Donald Trump's announcement of new tariffs on European countries, linking the move to the possibility of the United States purchasing Greenland. Trump threatened a 10% tariff on products from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, until an agreement is reached for the purchase of Greenland. European leaders reacted immediately, calling the threats 'unacceptable' and warning of a dangerous escalation in relations. Greenland's Minister of Mineral Resources expressed gratitude for the support of European countries, while the majority of Greenlanders oppose the annexation of the island by the United States.
