Poland to Phase Out Emergency Aid for Ukrainian Refugees

The Polish government announced today its intention to gradually phase out the emergency financial aid it has been providing to Ukrainian refugees since 2022. The government believes that the situation has stabilized after four years and that it is possible to move from temporary solutions to permanent ones. The bill provides for the abolition of the special aid system and the loss of certain rights for Ukrainians, such as housing, healthcare and social benefits. The move has drawn criticism, mainly from economic actors, who fear it will paralyze the labor market, as Ukrainians make up 66% of foreign workers in Poland. Public opinion is divided, with 48% agreeing and 46% disagreeing with providing aid.
