The Presidency and its One-Night Plants

Just hours before the start of the Cypriot presidency of the EU Council, the area in front of the Thoc building resembles a hurried construction site. Red carpets are being laid in haste, traffic arrangements are disrupting the city, and strict security measures are being taken for the ceremony. However, the biggest impression is made by the efforts of officials to “green” the area in the middle of winter, placing plants and flowers to create an idyllic image. This raises questions about the fate of these plants after the ceremony, as their chances of survival under these conditions are slim. It is considered that the planting should have been done in the spring, so as to ensure the rooting and long-term preservation of the plants, if the goal was the substantial upgrading of the space and not just the creation of a temporary image for the photos of the officials.
