Mercosur Agreement Could Boost Cypriot Exports, Raises Concerns

The EU's trade agreement with Mercosur countries (Latin America) was discussed in the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, emphasized that the agreement offers improved export opportunities for Cypriot agricultural products, with tariff reductions of up to 55%, as well as the promotion of authentic Cypriot products. However, MPs and agricultural organizations expressed concerns about unfair competition, product control standards, and potential damage to the Cypriot primary sector. The Minister assured that the concerns have been conveyed to the European Commission and that Cyprus supported ensuring the resilience of European agriculture and compliance with European standards. The Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalambides, also assured that public health would not be jeopardized and that strict controls would be carried out on imported products.
