Cyprus Civil Defence to Re-evaluate and Re-check Shelters

The Civil Defence announced that it will re-evaluate and re-check shelters across Cyprus, in collaboration with other relevant services. This move comes after the recent crisis and the need to ensure the island's preparedness. Citizens can locate the nearest shelter through the SafeCY application or by contacting the Civil Defence Operations Control Centre. Citizens are advised to prepare an 'Emergency Backpack' with essential items such as water, food, hygiene products, medicine and other necessities. In the event of an alarm, it is recommended to remain calm, follow the instructions of the authorities and access various sources of information. The presence of the Civil Defence in Akrotiri continues until the situation is re-evaluated and new instructions are given. The situation in the Akrotiri Municipal District remains in a state of evacuation until March 6th, while schools in the area will remain closed. According to the Civil Defence, around 250 citizens are being accommodated in various locations, where they are provided with accommodation and food in cooperation with the Cyprus Red Cross. In addition, the sending of a test message with preventive self-protection measures was a temporary solution and did not constitute the early warning system. An assessment of the problems encountered during the sending of the message will be carried out, with the aim of improving the system.
