Holy Synod Decides on Suspension of Former Paphos Bishop – Voting Breakdown

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus has decided, with 11 votes in favor and 5 against, to suspend the former Bishop of Paphos, Mr. Tychikos. The decision was made after an extensive discussion, taking into consideration Mr. Tychikos' refusal to comply with the terms set by the Synod, as well as his moves to appeal to civil courts. Four hierarchs from the group of the Metropolitan of Limassol and the Metropolitan of Morphou voted against the suspension. In favor were the Archbishop of Cyprus and 10 other hierarchs. The Synod condemned Mr. Tychikos' unacceptable actions, the unrest he causes with his statements, and his attempt to create divisions among its members. However, Mr. Tychikos is given the opportunity to lift the penalty if he submits a Declaration of Faith and withdraws his intention to appeal to the courts. The Synod's decision is a continuation of the ratification of the decision to depose Mr. Tychikos by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
