Ecuador Bombs Dissident FARC Camp with US Support

Ecuadorian armed forces, with US support, bombed a camp belonging to a group of former FARC dissidents on the border with Colombia. The operation, which took place in the province of Sucumbíos, targeted the criminal organization Comandos de la Frontera (CDF). Ecuador's Ministry of Defense stated that cooperation with the US is crucial in combating cross-border crime, while the Pentagon confirmed providing support at Ecuador's request. President Daniel Noboa announced the destruction of the camp of CDF leader Mono Tole and shared a video of the bombing. This operation comes at a time of increased tension in the region, as Ecuador faces growing activity from drug trafficking gangs. Approximately 70% of the cocaine produced in Colombia and Peru is exported through Ecuadorian ports, making the country a key hub for international drug trafficking. President Noboa has declared a “war” on gangs and has strengthened cooperation with the US and other countries to combat crime. This specific operation is part of this effort and marks a more aggressive approach to tackling criminal organizations. The CDF are accused of the murder of 11 soldiers in May 2025, which led to the escalation of the military operation. The Ecuadorian government considers combating the CDF a top priority for restoring security and stability in the country.
