Spain Train Crash: Investigation Underway After Deadly Collision

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fatal collision between two high-speed trains near Adaluz, Andalusia, Spain. A broken section of track was found at the scene of the accident and is being examined as a possible factor in the derailment. The death toll has risen to 40, with dozens injured and missing, making it one of the worst railway disasters in Spain in over a decade. The accident occurred when a train from Iryo, traveling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed and collided with a Renfe train traveling in the opposite direction. The front carriages of the second train were thrown onto an adjacent embankment as a result of the violent impact. Witnesses and survivors described scenes of chaos and terror. One passenger reported that the train 'suddenly tilted' followed by darkness and screams. Another passenger described being dragged out of the carriage through a broken window, covered in blood, with the help of other passengers. Authorities are investigating all possibilities, including whether the track fracture was the cause or the result of the derailment. The Minister of Transport stressed that the accident is 'extremely unusual,' given that it occurred on a straight section of track that had recently been renovated. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pledged that the government would get to the truth and inform the public with 'absolute transparency'.
