Record Cocaine Seizure in Spain on Salt Ship

Spanish police announced the seizure of nearly 10 tons of cocaine from a ship carrying salt in the Atlantic Ocean. The operation, described as the largest in the history of the Spanish police at sea, resulted in the arrest of 13 individuals linked to a multinational drug trafficking organization. The cocaine was hidden in 294 sacks and was destined for Europe, originating from Brazil. The operation also involved cooperation from US (DEA), French, Portuguese, and Brazilian authorities. The previous largest cocaine seizure at sea by Spanish police was in 1999, with 7.5 tons. Recent large seizures include 6.5 tons in 2023 and 13 tons in 2022 at the port of Algeciras. Spain is considered a major gateway for cocaine entering Europe, due to its ties with Latin America and its geographical location. The success of the operation is seen as a historic blow to drug trafficking organizations. This seizure highlights the growing threat of international drug trafficking and the need for enhanced cooperation between authorities to combat it.
