Good Rainfall Month for Cyprus, But No Significant Change in Water Balance, Says Meteorology Department

December 2025 is proving to be a particularly good month for rainfall in Cyprus, with repeated low-pressure systems bringing significant rainfall to much of the island, according to the Meteorology Department. In several areas, the total rainfall for the month to date is approaching or exceeding normal levels for the season, locally improving hydrological conditions, but without substantially changing the overall picture of the water balance. Yesterday (30/12) saw an average daily rainfall of 17.9 mm, with locally higher amounts. The rainfall is expected to continue today (31/12) as a low-pressure system affects Cyprus. A warning for rain, thunderstorms, and very strong winds remains in effect until 10:00 pm tonight. Despite the positive developments, the Meteorology Department emphasizes that the improvement in rainfall is not enough to fully reverse the situation in Cyprus’s water balance.
