Taxi Drivers in Larnaca to Protest - POAT Expresses Solidarity

The Pan-Cypriot Taxi Association (POAT) expresses solidarity with the taxi drivers of Larnaca, who are planning protests for tomorrow, Tuesday, January 13, 2026. The drivers are demanding the enforcement of legality and the protection of their profession, as they face issues with illegal passenger transport and piracy from unlicensed vehicles. POAT accuses the competent authorities of complete inaction in implementing the relevant legislation, which was published in April 2024. Furthermore, POAT states that irregularities are also observed from ride-hailing applications that do not comply with regulations regarding seating. They demand immediate and strict policing, as well as a permanent supervisor presence at airports to stop illegal activity. The POAT Board of Directors will meet urgently this weekend to assess the situation. If there are no immediate and substantial results, POAT threatens dynamic island-wide protests. The demands of the Larnaca drivers are common to those of drivers in all provinces. The organization insists on the need to protect the profession and ensure fair competition. POAT believes that the lack of controls and the non-application of legislation undermine the sustainability of the industry and create unfair competition. The organization is committed to continuing its struggle to protect the interests of its members and restore legality in the urban taxi sector.
