Social Robots Show Promise in Autism Therapy

New research highlights the potential therapeutic role of social robots in children with autism. The study, published in the journal Science, investigated the effectiveness of robots in enhancing attention, imitation, and turn-taking – key developmental mechanisms for children with autism. Two clinical trials demonstrated that robot-assisted therapy can achieve comparable outcomes to traditional therapy, while also increasing patient engagement. One trial showed equivalent results with 12 sessions of in-clinic therapy, while the second evaluated effectiveness in real-world settings, such as schools and homes, with similarly positive results. The research provides strong clinical evidence for integrating social robots into autism therapeutic interventions.
